In fact, the female is Patachoca Guaiamum, a species of crab that is going into extinction due to habitat destruction, collecting, trading, an area of restricted distribution and declining population.
The guaiamu or ganhumi is a large crab, which can reach over 11 cm in carapace and weigh more than 500g. Can you breathe in and out of the water, but spend most time out of water. They are common in mangroves. Morro de Sao Paulo can be found in almost its entire length, but especially near the rivers and streams that reach the beach.
They reach sexual maturity at four years. The reproductive cycle is fully connected to the first four months of the year in the hot season. Females carry the eggs with them for about two weeks. On a full moon or new summer females migrate together to the sea to release the newly hatched larvae, which depend on the salt water stop survive. Morro de Sao Paulo named this event "walked". During the walk, the females are full of eggs (fat) and sluggish (move slowly) there came the analogy with "Patachocas", which is a term used when referring to something or someone nerd.
In walked the guaiamuns become easy prey for hunters who depend on the one hand the sale of these species to survive, unaware of the importance of its preservation, seizing them.
The name Patachocas Eco Resort was chosen for our hotel, not only because it is a different name, but by our constant concern with preserving the environment. This concern made us set up an NGO - the Porch Project, aiming to study the species and awareness of the collectors and consumers, showing them that depends on the maintenance of populations of these animals and even the perpetuation of the species.
