The constant attacks of the Indians and Aymorés tupiniquins the continental population of the region favored the rapid settlement of the islands, and was born in 1535 in a village north of the island Morro de Sao Paulo.

Morro protected the so-called "bar False Bay of All Saints' strategic entrance to the Canal de Itaparica to Fort St. Anthony (now Barra Lighthouse), and the channel Tinharé was essential in the production flow of the main centers for the supply of capital, Salvador.

The geographical importance of the island during the colonial period explains the wealth of historical monuments, now protected by National Heritage.

Morro de Sao Paulo is currently divided into four beaches.

Photos of the Island

First Beach

Next to the Lighthouse Hill, the first beach is excellent for those who like to surf. One of the island where they found the perfect waves, being more pronounced in winter. It is a small beach, 300 meters long, but charming and crystalline waters.

On this beach the first houses were built of vacationers in the region. Nowadays almost all turned into inns, shops or restaurants, and the few that remain are rented to tourists throughout the year.

Like the houses, which gave rise to the inns, the old beach huts, almost all belonging to the families of natives, today, give rise to one or another tent with international flair, not only in food but also in music and the environment .
The first beach is also known as the beach nautical diversions. Here you can give back a banana boat, rent surfboards and diving equipment, besides being the beach for those coming down the zipline from the top of the lighthouse.

Second Beach

Despite its calm waters, is the busiest beach of Morro de São Paulo, 400 meters long, ideal for anyone who enjoys moving and fun, beauty mingles with the lively bustle of the stalls where you can enjoy good music tropical drinks to chat with friends, and still enjoy a game of volleyball, or racquetball footvolley, the beach has set up networks for the practice of these sports every afternoon. Not stopping there for the 2nd beach continues its lively night, chimes in with festivals and tropical climate, which begin at midnight and go until dawn.

The staircase by which you can reach the second beach deserves a break ... It can be seen the beginning of the whole expanse of blue waters that surround the island, and at low tide you can see the sandy bottom, even before descending the stairs.

Third Beach

With 800 meters long and as beautiful as the beaches of Morro de São Paulo, the 3rd beach is a tiny island called Caitá for which you can swim and enjoy the view from there, enjoying a great peace. His clear and calm waters forming natural pools of shallow water at low tide, ideal for a delicious swim.

Fourth Beach

At first glance, the Fourth Beach appears to have no end, it has a 4 km long. A great barrier reef so many natural pools on this beach. Here, with only a diving mask, you will feel part of this paradise. A multitude of fish do not mind sharing their habitat with visitors.

Here no longer hears the buzz of the other beaches, only a gentle breeze and the sound of the sea. Perfect place to relax, read or take a nap under a shade. That if you resist the temptation to go forward, walking as far as their effort to achieve. Excellent for children who can enjoy themselves in earnest.

Walking along the beach Monday, the first entry leads to Zimbo (small village). Entering Zimbo, there are paths leading to the village of Gamboa, or the hill of Mangaba.

Besides the four main beaches, there are other beaches and islands to visit:

Praia do Encanto

Walking a little further, by the 4th beach through a mangrove forest and across a small little river, arrives Thursday to beach or Praia do Encanto.

Until recently, this was still called fourth beach, as well as the entire length of beach to the border of the river that separates the island of Tinharé Island Boipeba. It has deeper pools, ideal for scuba diving.

Garapuá

On the way to the neighboring island of Boipeba, there is the village of Garapuá, a small fishing village with a beautiful cove, small, calm and crystalline waters. Here are some inns have simple, but nothing resembling a tourist village of Morro de São Paulo.

Boipeba

The neighboring island of Tinharé, is separated by the River of Hell. Morro de Sao Paulo out almost daily tractors or boats that are organized tours to the island.

Ponta da Pedra

It is the beach that gives access to the town of Gamboa. There are almost 30 minutes walk from the pier of the hill to the dock in Gamboa. This path is called by all inhabitants of Ponta da Pedra or Gamboa Beach.

Beaches surrounded by stones, crystal clear and calm, the privilege here is that there is still no beach shack, only the Yacht Club, where sailing ships that pass through here are anchored.

Just ahead there is an erosion of clay - say a bath of this clay is good for the skin.

Praia da Gamboa

20 minutes walking along the beach of Ponta da Pedra, comes to the town of Gamboa, with a few inns and restaurants with regional food which preserves the air of a quiet fishing village.

Many tourists who prefer the quiet, Gamboa choose to stay, simply make a "hop" to the Hill when they want a bit of a stir, enjoy a party or see movement on the main street.

At Gamboa the waters are calm and crystal clear and the privilege is being able to be at the beach without loud music or a lot of people around you in touch with nature and people of the place - most natives live in Gamboa, which allows to know the way of life, still preserved the natives of the island.
